The movie has started production

by Selina Wilken

The Michael Fassbender-produced movie adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed video game has finally begun filming.

An adaptation movie for Ubisoft’s popular video game franchise Assassin’s Creed has long been in the works, but until now, we weren’t sure when it was actually going to happen.

But with production officially underway, we’re now looking at a December 2016 release date.

With Michael Fassbender set to star and produce and Justin Kurzel directing, the Assassin’s Creed movie is still shrouded in mystery.

The games take place during various time periods, where you play an assassin tasked with executing various, sometimes famous historical figures.

The game’s central story tells the conflict between the Assassins and the Knights Templar, whose lineage can be traced back to an ancient species pre-dating humanity, whose society was destroyed by a solar storm.

Main character Desmond Miles lives in the present, but experiences his Assassin ancestors’ memories through something called an “Animus,” in order to pick up their skills and learn more about his present-day purpose.

We don’t know how much of this mythology the movie will incorporate, or if it’ll choose to tell the story of one single historical assassin.

Film Divider reports that the movie will follow an original character, and will be set mainly during the Spanish Inquisition, with present-day sections suggesting that the Animus plot will be used in the movie.

Fassbender is allegedly playing a character in each timeline, so we’re probably looking at a reincarnation-type backstory for the central character, who is experiencing the memories of his past self rather than an ancestor.

‘Assassin’s Creed’ is set to be released on Dec. 21, 2016
