Guild Wars 2’ live-action trailer released

by Anna Roberts

Guild Wars 2 launched at the end of last month and now ArenaNet is giving the hype train some extra fuel in the form of a live-action trailer to help its MMO past the initial launch rush.

The Guild Wars 2 trailer was first teased in mid-August with what we thought was a still of one of Eir Stegalkin’s eyes published on the official Facebook page. Eir is a member of Destiny’s Edge, a group of adventurers who, along with the player, are on a mission to defeat Zhaitan, one of the Elder Dragons. Quotes from previous trailers were posted on the Guild Wars 2 Twitter account during September 9-10, for example:

“It is time for legends to become real.” #GW2 #GuildWars2

— Guild Wars 2 (@GuildWars2) September 10, 2015

The “legends” line originates in the very first teaser trailer for Guild Wars 2, which debuted at Gamescom in 2010. Further tweets featured quotes taken from later race trailers. The heavy use of hashtags throughout the series of tweets hinted at something big, and ArenaNet didn’t disappoint.

This is the first Guild Wars 2 trailer that’s been released since the release date announcement back in June.

The game has suffered from a few launch bumps – notably the outage of the trading post and forums, plus several hours of server downtime – but nevertheless, Guild Wars 2 is riding high with a 93 rating on Metacritic. This fresh Guild Wars 2 trailer aims to win over the remaining skeptics and consumers who had been “on the fence” about purchasing.

Guild Wars 2 opened on August 25 to those who had pre-purchased the game, and August 28 for everyone else. Want to know more? We’ve written a column asking what all the fuss is about, and we’ve published our first impressions in a week one review.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you playing Guild Wars 2? Which professions and races are your favourites?
